Acting as @Europarl_EN Rapporteur for #Turkey, I have presented my report on
today in @EP_ForeignAff
It has not been an easy task. And it is a critical text. But overall, it is a timely and objective report.

#Turkey is, in the words of @JosepBorrellF, the biggest challenge for EU Foreign Policy.
As a candidate for accession,
should be converging in values, policies and interests with the #EU. But the last years, have witnessed just the opposite: a clear divergence in all areas.
As a candidate for accession,

Since @KatiPiri ´s last report in March 2019, the situation has continuously deteriorated. For a year and a half, news have all but turned alarming. #Turkey has prompted in the @Europarl_EN agenda almost weekly.
This report cannot just be another report where we criticize Turkey, and simply move on.
This is a moment to reflect and re-examine #EUTurkey relations.
Is the current framework useful for both parties
?

For
:
Make no mistake: this trajectory of collision with the EU is deliberate.
The core issue is the #ruleoflaw situation, but there are some others: fundamental freedoms, constitutional issues, and an assertive/aggressive foreign policy.

The accession process has led us nowhere. The #EU cannot simply drag a country towards democracy: it is a decision for the country to become democratic.
Thus, we need to reassess our framework for relations.

The report asks to freeze
accession, not as a form of retribution, but because we do need to reassess the whole
relation.
Always with one thing in mind: the best way the #EU has to support democrats and pro-Europeans in #Turkey is the accession process.

But the
should also bear something in mind:
The @Europarl_EN can never give up its role as guardian of European democratic values and Human Rights.
Other EU institutions are offering Tk a positive agenda where democratic conditionality appears to have vanished into thin air.

To conclude:
The @EUCouncil engages with #Turkey as if it was not a candidate country, whereas the @Europarl_EN engages with
as if it only was a candidate state.
We, the EU, need one single foreign policy to engage with Turkey. Only then we can reassess our relationship.
