I really feel academia underestimates the benefits of coming from a working class background. Why do I give such good presentations and handle questions well? Cause I worked retail and used to sell iPhones to the elderly. You try explaining the cloud to an 80 year old
Oh, I’m charismatic and engaging? Yeah, I used to sell children’s shoes for commission, my paycheck depended on it
Do I explain all my terms and give knowable but simple explanations? Sure, I used to do gate analysis and sell running shoes. Let’s talk plantar fasciitis but not really, I’m no longer paid to do so
My years of experience with this, plus my natural talent for public speaking (yes, I know I’m a woman and not supposed to own my talents without being arrogant but fuck it) make me excellent in this area of academia and I’m not sorry for saying so. Working class built academic me
