alright i'll play. for comparison's sake, last month i made about 500% more $ from bandcamp (where all of my music is, by choice, available to hear for free) than i did from spotify (where all of my music costs a subscription fee, and very little money makes it back to me) https://twitter.com/getcerebral/status/1334504304233877506
i'm not saying "listeners owe me more," it just grosses me out that we all seem to recognize that spotify's artist payout system is broken and unfair and yet gleefully post graphics advertising spotify at the end of each year
even if you listen to 90% of your music on spotify, which is how a lot of people operate, there are ways of sharing your fandom for the artists you loved each year that doesn't center a tech giant that underpays them. it's just a little insult to injury, even though it's reality
i like that my music can be heard for free. i also think it's sad we've centered our entire relationship with music listening on one company that's proven it doesn't really value musicians. a picture of 1 cassette you loved in 2020 means a lot more to me than a wrapped graphic
