I think that a lot of institutions people *want* to see survive will survive. Movie theaters have not earned the good will it takes for people to fight for its survival. Not sure how much fervent support you're going to get after overcharging people for our entire lives
the movie theater experience has been enjoyable in spite of movie theaters themselves. 30 minute previews. $4 processing fees. $20 buckets of popcorn. Who is going to *fight* for AMC and Regal to stay open?
this is the same thing that happened to Blockbuster and is happening to cable. They have captive audiences and treat us like trash and as soon as there's an alternative we bounce.
Same thing happened to taxis and will happen to airlines when we like teleport or whatever lol. I have no reason to fight for these places to survive.
yes, movie theaters as a *concept* are worth keeping. But movie theater *companies* are not.
and as is always the case, the CEOs who jacked up the prices are going to cash out and be fine. The people who work in those theaters are going to get screwed over. Like I really hope we can get to a place where these predatory companies never get off the ground
I don't think AMC and Regal will evolve because their whole business model is built on exploitation. But I think the movie theater industry will. Smaller, boutique theaters. More user friendly experience. Something we all end up actually enjoying.
AMC and Regal have no innovative bone in their bodies because they've had captive audiences. They won't adapt. They're incapable. like there are a lot of movie experiences I'd pay a lot of money for and would do happily. AMC and Regal never presented a single one.
