Let’s talk Veganism: a thread for carnists and vegans alike 🧵
First things first, as vegans we care about non human animal lives just as much as human lives. Don’t go off of a perspective that has been spouted by white vegans just because BIPOC vegans haven’t had, and seem to be repeatedly denied , a platform to hate or stand against us.
BIPOC vegans, and disabled vegans exist. Just as you’re discouraged from reading a single article and using that to judge a movement, look for the voices of bipoc, disabled, and queer vegans around the world and do your research to understand the importance of veganism.
Now we talk about veganism and culture. Adhering to, and preserving, culture is crucial. Culture is a beautiful thing, but some cultural practices are exploitative and rooted in supremacy.
And you might be thinking “omg that’s a racist/colonialist mindset”. No. As time passes and we learn to care about other beings, we also learn to make exceptions to certain practices that have harmed humans and non human animals.
For the sake of vegans who can’t go completely plant based, we need to stop using “vegan” for “plant based”. Don’t be so overzealous in your veganism that you become ableist.
Vegans with circumstances they can’t control shouldn’t feel guilty for not being your gold standard.
That being said, if someone doesn’t know about the dairy and meat industries, then we educate them. But if they DO know what’s happening, there’s no way they’re not getting shamed for refusing to do their best to reduce the harm they allow into their lives. (cont.)
No one learns anything without understanding that their actions are wrong and hurt others. Do you make reservations when insulting bigots online or irl? No? Thought so.
Don’t let your guilt and ego fuel your hate for a movement which strives for good.
TDLR
•Don’t erase BIPOC, and disabled vegans
•Liberation includes non human animals
•Listen, learn, be receptive, be understanding
This thread is a mess because I’m busy studying personality theories in psychology right now but yeah.
Please follow BIPOC vegans.
These amazing people have been using their platform for education and support and you could stand to pay attention.

And a lot more
I forgot to add poor, low income, and lower class vegans! They exist just as well as vegans of other demographics.

And using vulnerable people as an argument AGAINST veganism when there’ve been people who’ve been FORCED to adopt a meat diet is just gross. Don’t do that
