The basic framework for competing with Beijing and retaining US global leadership: blood, steel, and silicon.
I've been fleshing out this framework for a while now.

Let me explain what each leg of that triangle means. /1
Blood represents the human factor.

This means investment in modernized education across the board to make us a smarter nation able to compete in the global economy. Investment in biotechnology to make us a physically stronger and healthier nation. Investment in quality of life.
Steel represents industry. The ability to produce more here at home or in our allied partners, reducing reliance on hostile nations like China and creating stable economic development. It means being able to mobilize our industry for conflict for both manned and unmanned systems.
Silicon represents investment in next generation systems built around artificial intelligence, quantum computing, the brains of unmanned systems on and off the battlefield. It represents the future of human development.
Silicon cannot be achieved without the first two legs. In fact, all 3 legs require input and investment from the others. We cannot simply build machines w/o a smarter workforce and we cannot justify investment in defense w/o investing in our people and treating them well.
Competing with China and facing them head on in a cold or hot war requires a whole of government effort that doesn't just look out, it works simultaneously from one side of the Pacific to the other. Neglecting one leg makes the others weaker and us weaker as a whole.
