no nuance november:
yes, spotify is evil, ik y'all know. what's twisted is that musicans pivoted to streaming because the industry forced their hands. if you aren't streaming, it's really difficult to develop a fanbase. without a fanbase, how do you actually recoup the money 1/
you spent on your work without people booking you for shows or purchasing your merch? streaming (esp spotify) is a prime example of laborer exploitation. it is a difficult to escape behemoth, like amazon. sure, you can boycott making purchases from amazon like i do however 2/
AWS hosts an enormous chunk of the internet which means that if you even use the internet or a company that Amazon owns or Bezos has shares in, you're still making money for Amazon. if you choose not to distro to streaming sites as a musician, you know that it will be hard 3/
to reach people who actually want to listen to your music bc so many fuckin people use streaming. people that say they don't stream, stream. it's not wrong for someone to want to get paid for their creative labor and we're not getting the money from streaming but have to keep 4/
our portfolios on there, again, because shows and merch are what musicians survive off of and, newsflash, now we can't even play shows. at this point we need a coordinated, mass exodus from streaming in order to get demands met. how do you organize such a thing? 5/
I just got started in organizing so i don't know how we would organize hundreds of millions of people and multimilloon dollar grossing artists to leave the platform. it's a huge logistical task. to bring the amazon relation back, you can boycott amazon but as someone who does 6/
there are a) tons of people who still buy b) tons of people who work at amazon and have to to survive (even if they are organizing) c) AWS and other amazon holdings making money off of the monopoly. lot of people are cursing musicians for streaming but do they curse workers 7/
at amazon for working there in order to survive? do they curse people who "promote the internet" for putting money in Bezos' pocket for simply being on a website hosted by AWS? the only way for us to get demands met is to stop fucking demeaning the worker and focusing the hate 8/
at the boss: Daniel Ek. I see a lot of "fuck you, disgusting musician" for posting spotify numbers but i haven't seen ONE POST specifically mentioning Daniel Ek by name??? that's like screaming at the amazon delivery guy for bringing your neighbor packages instead of at bezos 9/
for exploiting them. take all of this into account. please buy music and merch, please host livestreams that pay artists, and PLEASE realize that musicians are the workers and that your vitriol should be focused on Daniel Ek and the board of Spotify.
