in the midst of the free Spotify marketing blitz, we need to have a big discussion about how @Bandcamp has been the only digital platform to stand up and make a case for artist forward digital access that has created a new culture for discovering artists with Bandcamp Friday
I've seen the argument and heard it from execs over the years that the Spotify model has the algorithm that monitors your listening habits and gives you things you would like, like how you mention pyjamas and your instagram ads become all about fleece PJs.
Bandcamp, on the other hand, has managed to do the one thing that no other digital platform has been able to do, which is recreate the music store experience, the experience of having someone say "you should check this out" even if it's outside of your taste and link you to it
Seriously, you arrive at Bandcamp dot com and there's some of the best music journalism in the game, there's links to things that I've never heard of, in genres I don't normally listen to, but I'm compelled to explore. They're the only ones operating at that level
added bonus is Bandcamp has never once elevated one creator on their platform who regularly courts the far-right to 100 million dollar status and I just think that's neat.
Also, hey, please don’t DM me and ask if you can use this thread to pitch a think piece on it. Trust that I’m already doing that, let me use my own thoughts for my own work.
