ICYMI earlier this week, I spoke with . @rezaaslan in the season 1 finale of Powers & Principalities. I'm immensely proud of these interviews and hope that this season can be an introductory resource for people wanting to learn about Christian nationalism. https://open.spotify.com/episode/3yb3UmxG950zLr2xMKy6vq?si=MxABqnvbTpqtfrllPjYVGA
Here are the other folks I've talked to, in reverse-chronological order:
I spoke to . @jackmjenkins of @RNS about the history of the Religious Left & its current permutation as a 'coalition of coalitions,' & the counterpoint that leaders like @RevDrBarber provide in a media & political landscape dominated by white evangelicals: https://open.spotify.com/episode/0QlhIls3Tx0l61jM3zXC9G?si=-RO9GPxyTYiQ0CRHb_rxFg
I spoke to . @robertpjones about his new book, White Too Long, and the history of racism & white supremacy in *all* white American Christian traditions, as well as the "restricted moral vision" of white Christians and the Racism Index: https://open.spotify.com/episode/38gf6Wp5CsqgqM5b1nG4ql?si=Z-1P31CqSvervG4Z3afVMw
. @sarahposner and I spoke about her book Unholy, and the intellectual & social connections between the New Right, the Religious Right, and the alt-right. Trumpism is the culmination, not an aberration, of poltiical conservative activity. https://open.spotify.com/episode/14lFHJ4zJPZUqrVX1IUUdB?si=b0oBwzK4RM-1nOhV4gI7YQ
. @julieingersoll joined me to discuss the role of Christian Reconstruction in the Christian education movement. Christian Reconstruction can be both hard to explain & identify, and Prof. Ingersoll quite literally wrote the book on it. https://open.spotify.com/episode/2EcnrYG6LWO57UHFFRpO4V?si=r4BG3Gj9SMSTUw3KWV9SPA
I spoke with . @kkdumez about her book Jesus & John Wayne, which examines the cultural ideals of evangelical masculinity. It's a must-read if you want to understand why a "strong-man" like Trump is lauded by white evangelicals. https://open.spotify.com/episode/7MVkliMinHVwZGaIWuxZKZ?si=S9_JmPKESnSVRPEx9eDg4g
. @kathsstewart joined me to discuss her book The Power Worshippers, which details the startling variety of tactics white evangelicals & Christian nationalists use to accumulate and keep political power. https://open.spotify.com/episode/2earN1xuvnsfpHByFsqNzF?si=-7jl63o3TVu0LuHdZ1jOMA
You've heard these voices and seen mention of these books in places like @onthemedia & @nprfreshair. In this series, which was developed independently, I sought to gather them together to give multiple perspectives on this essential sociopolitical problem in America.
We need the perspectives of experts on religion, politics, race, sociology, and gender to develop a fuller understanding of these movements. We need members of the media and the general public to understand them.
Any time you mention the show (or . @exvangelicalpod, my long-running show focused on personal stories of leaving white evangelicalism), or rate and review it, it is a boon. So please take a minute to rate and review it if you haven't.
And keep up with and support all my other work by subscribing to The Post-Evangelical Post, my newsletter that helps fund these projects. I've got around 30 paid subs now - my EOY goal is 100. 800 would let me do this full-time. https://postevangelicalpost.substack.com/
