[1/3] If a ship is a "first mover", i.e. more efficient, then it consumes less fuel = they'll pay less in #CO2 dues under #EUETS. CO2 is proportionate to fuel consumption. This the very LOGIC of any #MBM.
This makes calls for free allowances senseless. …https://lloydslist.maritimeintelligence.informa.com/LL1134910/Maersk-and-CMA-CGM-push-EU-for-free-emission-allowances

[2/3] #ETS free allowances are designed only for sectors that are unable to pass these costs on to final consumers (EU CoA: http://shorturl.at/fIP56 ) #Maersk can easily pass on these costs. Even a €50/tonne_CO2 ETS price would be increase the price of an #iPad only by a few cents
[3/3] Ships, especially deep-sea, don't compete with other transport modes either = no carbon leakage. One doesn't "truck" stuff from China to EU. Planes/trains won't work either: you'd need 1265 #Boeing747 or 88km-long train to carry the cargo capacity of a single MS Emma Maersk
