It #InternationalDayofDisabledPeople today and I’d really like to ask more of my able bodied mutuals to step up and get more engaged with what’s happening to disabled people where you live. PIP is the most heavily scrutinised benefits system in the UK.
Disabled people in the uk make up almost two thirds of Covid-19 deaths. The government cut care to disabled people during the pandemic and has refused to raise disabled benefits in line with the rise to universal credit.
Disabled people lose their benefits if we get married. It costs us on average an extra £583 a month just to live in this society the same way the rest of you do. Disabled people are twice as likely to be unemployed as non disabled people.
Disabled people are also 6% more likely to be living in poverty. This govt has killed tens of thousands of us & the only outcry I see is from other disabled people. Non-disabled people need to get involved & speak up for us. I’m so tired. #InternationalDayOfPeopleWithDisability
This year has been dehumanising and incredibly traumatising for me. As I know it has for many other disabled people. During this pandemic medical staff were told to prioritise who received care. I have to carry a medical book with me that refutes and DNR order forced on me.
I know of people who have had respirators removed by force who have died. Murdered by an institution that is supposed to care for them. I want to be able to celebrate today. But this year has just been too traumatic. I can’t celebrate when there’s been so much loss.
But, today I am thankful for my disabled friends, who have helped get me through these past few months. We’ve shared our trauma & tried to lighten the load. I am forever grateful for being able to share our fears, heartaches and accomplishments

Non-disabled people, to get an idea of what it’s really like living in the uk as a disabled person you should read The War on Disabled People by @EllenClifford1 and Crippled: Austerity and The Dehumanisation of Disabled People by @DrFrancesRyan #InternationalDayofDisabledPeople
