The Genomics and Arabidopsis Network (GARNet) was supported by @bbsrc for the past twenty years. This allowed us to bring together our thoughts on what is needed to run a research network, as published in @JXBot

1. Incentivize Community Participation: Provide funding to help build the community. Organise a useful, cheap meeting to bring people together! Hopefully this will expand the network to become part of the wider research landscape. See @phenomUk @HVB as current examples (2/11)
2. Stay ahead of the technology curve: New technologies will move a community-forward so engage with members by promoting and training in these techniques. Ensure funding flexibility to respond to technologies that arise during the grant period (3/11)
3. Build an experienced advisory group who are invested in the network. A mix of senior and junior advisors will both legitimise the network and yet ensure a flow of new ideas. Aim for geographic and gender equality! (4/11)
4. Add value by securing additional funding to support community-facing activities: Gain funding from other organisations so as to add value to your network whilst building a wider community. In the past 5 years GARNet gained funding from @SEB @newphyt @plantmethods @BCAI (5/11)
5. Integrate with the wider community: Longevity of the network will benefit when a larger cohort of people are invested in its success. We developed multidisciplinary relationships with data scientists, mathematicians and social scientists to better integrate the community(6/11)
6. Engage the next generation. This is self-explatory as they will be the future of the network. This can be achieved through provision of travel funding and by organising training events aimed at those people actually doing the research! (7/11)
7. Employ a Project Manager. The Road to Hell is paved with good intentions and alas for a busy academic somethings will inevitably slip. A project manager will ensure the network stays on track and connected with the community! (8/11)
9. Thanks to all committee members (on twitter) who have made GARNet a success! @SabinaLeonelli @AnnaAmtmann @eirini_kaiserli @PMGilmartin @StefanKepinski @benitez_lab @Ajwhall @seantobiasmay @UKRI_CEO @Andrea_L_Harper (10/11)
10. GARNet wishes all the best to future networks who can play an essential role in community integration, knowledge exchange and training! (11/11)
Our legacy will continue through the work of Arabidopsis Events UK :)
