Today is #InternationalDayofDisabledPeople or #InternationalDayofPeoplewithDisabilities or whatever version of PFL you prefer. I've seen so many posts lauding disabled bloggers and influencers, columnists and celebrities but I need to tell you about the real heroes.
#disability
First, DPAC - @Dis_PPL_Protest
Disabled People Against Cuts
A pressure group for disabled people, created managed and organised BY disabled people who work tirelessly often without wider recognition to improve things in the UK for all living with disabilities or chronic illness.
And next, @johnpringdns. Disability News Service, run by the remarkable John Pring. This site reports on disability and welfare issues that often get ignored - or only taken up much later - by the mainstream media. John is one of the most committed and hardworking people I know.
I guess @DrFrancesRyan doesn't need much of an introduction, but multiple non-disabled people I know tell me how they've become aware of disability issues through her writings in the @guardian. No one else writes on these topics so frequently in such a widely-read medium.
So yes, actors and influencers and people with well-lit photoshoots and large social media followings are doing a great thing for disability awareness, but away from the spotlight there is a whole lot more going on that i want disabled people to be aware of too!
Add your own #UnsungDisabilityHeroes too, yeah!
