In 1991 Alberta was shocked by news that a 15-year boy had killed four family members with a legally-owned .22 calibre rifle. Killed were Susan Mandin (age 41), Maurice (46), Islay (12), and Janelle (10). Susan and Maurice were teachers. #cdnpoli #guncontrol #MassShooting 1/3
The shooter was convicted of second degree murder. An aunt of the shooter spoke about the pain of the incident in 2001: “You don’t know after two years or five years what the impact’s going to be in 10 years.” She said the “ripple effect goes on and on and on.” #cdnpoli 2/3
Thanks @ColetteMandin for sharing this family tragedy with me. Domestic gun violence often receives immediate news coverage but is then forgotten by the public. There are no stone memorials or annual public commemorations. But, families deal with the aftermath for decades... 3/3
