I will be discussing the relationship between wearable technologies and the body. I argue that wearable technologies that are designed for fitness used in concurrence with social media which promotes fitness and diet culture contributes to body dysmorphia in young women #COMN3517
The female body is constantly being overanalyzed, scrutinized, and criticized through both media seen on social media sites and the policing one does on themselves through the use of technology. #COMN3517
Ultimately, I argue that wearable technology used in conjunction with problematic and toxic social media use can influence poor self-esteem amongst young women and, in extreme cases, body dysmorphia. #COMN3517
Wearable Tech:
Using tech like the Apple Watch, there is the potential to develop a hyper focus on fitness, calories burned, and/or movement. This can lead a user to develop not only an unhealthy reliance on the device, but also a negative effect on their mental health #COMN3517

Social Media Algorithms:
Social media can cause, promote, and further the development of an eating disorder. This is especially true for Instagram. A study done by Ysabel Gerrard (2018) showed that Instagram’s algorithm fails to remove pro-eating disorder content. #COMN3517

Identity and Implications:
As a woman who has grown up surrounded by the pressures and beauty ideals that are imposed on women of every age, I can attest to the fact that this environment is quite taxing on one’s mental health and perception of their own body. #COMN3517

Identity and Implications:
Our concepts of femininity and beauty are societal constructions. The ideal that Western culture emphasizes for women to achieve a “thin/slim thick” look. This “slim-thick” ideal has been made popular through celebrities like Kim Kardashian #COMN3517

In our current state of society, where women are constantly pressured to look or act a certain way, the least we should expect from digital devices and online platforms is a safe environment that does not trap the user in unhealthy and potentially dangerous mindsets. #COMN3517
