The argument about reading Marx is not really about books. It's about left-leaning people scared of being called Marxists because that has become a shameful thing to be in the eyes of liberals and a capitalist society.
They try to disassociate Marxism from struggles that were informed by it to make themselves more comfortable and still be accepted as 'safe' by the establishment. So Angela Davis becomes a Black revolutionary not a communist. Olive Morris a "housing activist" not a communist.
Keir Hardie becomes a just a Labour politician and trade unionist when he was writing articles about Marx. Same can be said about Sylvia Pankhurst "just" being a suffragette.
My personal pet peeve is Claudia Jones being "just the mother of carnival" and even when buried next to Karl Marx has been watered down to appeal to Liberal feminists during Black History Month.
