Former French President Valery Giscard d'Estaing died yesterday. It was he who first described the ability to print dollars, convertible to gold, as "America's exorbitant privilege".
The French hated this as it "resulted in an "asymmetric financial system" which supported "American living standards and subsidizing American multinationals".

Giscard d'Estaing also designed a French bond (named after him, Giscard Bonds), who's price was linked that that of gold. Caused excitement in the gold market in 1987 when they matured.
