It fundamentally structures heterosexual life, for one. Much of what terfs still call “compulsory heterosexuality” is actually compulsory cisnormativity. The idea that there is no person before or without a gender is pernicious, and essential to how they see the world.
They call it sex and what they mean by that is “the gender (type/genre) you can’t change.” The indelible ink your life was written in, which comes directly (for both terfs and a randomly selected person on the street) from Christian ideology.
Human sexual dimorphism has only diminished as our species develops. One of the first important experiments in sex glands in the last century went like this:
Scientist removed ovaries and testes from test baby guinea pigs, charted their growth over time and their dominance behavior. They essentially equalized but how does a cis read that information? ‘The females masculinized and the males became passive and feminized’
They can’t get their heads around the idea that “sexual dimorphism” isn’t the actual word of God. In a world that, (if you care to look,) is mostly made up of life that doesn’t fit that description at all, from amoebas to ‘gay penguins’ who just want to be moms.
“I am that I am” isn’t exactly “He/him pronouns please bro”
Imagine looking at a flame that does not consume nor does it diminish and saying “that’s a dude.” Couldn’t be me!
