THREAD. Hollywood has often approached the Latinx audience through a stereotypical, myopic lens. They assumed the Latinx market was niche instead of mainstream and preferred mainly Spanish language programming. But this group’s interests are as complex & diverse as they are. 1/
Although the Latinx audience is not a monolith, we can still examine viewing patterns of Latinx households to ascertain what shows they generally prefer. Our UCLA Hollywood Diversity Report 2020 includes the following top 10 tables. 2/
In broadcast in 2018-19, you can see that the shows in the top 10 for Latinx households closely align with those in the top 10 for 18-49. The order differs though with the top show for Latinx HHs being one with a Latinx co-lead during that season. 3/
In the past, the top 10 cable list has been the most revealing. It’s been dominated by tween shows reflecting a younger skewing demo. In 2018-19, there were only three tween shows along with two family shows on Hallmark. The other half included horror, fantasy, & family drama. 4/
Although the digital ratings were limited to Netflix and Amazon shows in 2018-19, the top 10 list reveals Latinx HHs watching shows with Latinx storylines and/or featuring well-known Latinx actors. 5/
Overall, Latinx audiences are avid entertainment consumers. They like watching films and shows that are trending. They’re savvy and know what a “prestige” or high-quality show looks like. They will also follow celebrities they recognize and relate to. 6/
Studios and networks need to invest accordingly to get the attention of the Latinx viewer. Finding shows that appeal to the Latinx audience is not impossible. It’s just important to include Latinx voices with decision-making power at every step of the process. 7/
