So I’m a huge Legion fan but for whatever reason it’s most famous era, the Levitz, run just dosnt hit me. Frankly I want to like it more than I do so that’s why I’m rereading this.
I gotta though this is really annoying. Like every line out of Invisble Kids mouth is just like “please PLEASE don’t forget this character is French”.
It is interesting as a modern reader knowing who the bad guy is because what is this outfit? Kinda cool design for something used for one panel
Speaking of knowing who the villain is, as of now I feel about this story the same I did when I read Judas Contract-
-The 80’s for whatever reason is just the era of comics I connect least with. I don’t get much personality from them and already knowing all the twists the stories just feel like going through motions.
And another very cool heat vision panel from Giffen. Love how opposite it is from Superboy’s in the first issue. Clark’s seemed so precise and careful and Mon is literally raining fire
So far this story is really checking off all the boxes of what makes Legion stories special. This time being the struggle and tragedy of not being able to warn your friend of what’s to come
Again my struggle with Invisible Kid. He can feel just like a walking stereotype going off a list of basic French phrases. Then it is followed by an endearing moment that shows he’s got depth and room to grow
Something I didn’t notice before. Same species as Muto? Maybe not but always cool to see reoccurring alien races
Big highlight for me is the demonstration of the Super power set in both art and writing. I know it’s going to come up more later
The sorcerers world rules. I always respect when magic is brought up in Legion stories. I think the instinct for most would to just go hard sci fi but when this kind of stuff comes up it’s a reminder that every tool in the DCU is still available it’s just bigger.
Dream Girl having a feeling about this child hits different post me having a baby. The sense of unknown potential is very strong
Alright. Previous to this issue I was feeling like this was a solid story but noting too thematically interesting. I’m changing my tune after this baby appeared. I’m more invested than before.
Looking very Apokaliptic. There havnt been a lot of obvious clues in the writing pointing to who the villain is but if your a reader familiar with the imagery ( which I imagine was uncommon during the time) it’s extremely obvious
Contentious father son stuff really hits hard. Chameleon boy feels like one of the most layered characters of the cast during this run where characters like that felt a priority
Nice to read a bit about Daxam that isn’t about how xenophobic it is. It can definitely feel like a one note planet
This is neat that this is like a third separate way heat vision has been portrayed by a different character. Very creative little touches
This story truly hits every mark for things people love about the Legion
Relationship with Clark
An election
Inner team drama
And now The Subsitutes!

Honestly I feel like this spread is a good example of how I feel about the story as a whole. It’s well done, it’s gorgeous, it’s very cool, but if there’s some deeper meaning to it I just don’t get it
Overall to me this story is just the biggest case of something being overhyped to me. I see that it’s quality, I respect what it did for it’s time, but when people throw around words like “best” I do expect I little more thematic punch.
As a modern reader I’d give it like a 7.5/ 10.
