A lot will be said about the failure of ex-IDF chiefs in politics but here is one explanation: When in uniform, they don't really experience challenge to their authority. Generals don't fight with them like MKs do. Journalists don't attack them like they attack politicians. 1/4
Israel in 2020 is less militaristic & that's a good thing. The general public doesn't know names it used to remember like Aman chief or deputy CoS. On other hand, the aura around generals still exists & they are protected from criticism by the massive @IDFSpokesperson Unit. 2/4
All that goes away though when they enter politics. @Gabi_Ashkenazi has a single spokesman. @gantzbe has two. They used to have hundreds. They used to be celebrated as heroes. Now they are called losers. This is a tough fall for anyone, especially a former IDF CoS. 3/4
I don't question their bravery but remember they mostly fought an enemy they didn't see.
They didn't get yelled at by adversaries on live TV like @netanyahu does. They weren't publicly embarrassed like now. Bottom line: Politics is not for everyone, especially IDF generals. 4/4
