Enough is enough. Why oh why do I have the same old story every single day? There is so much ignorance and entitlement on our roads. To the driver honking at me for taking the centre of the left of three lanes, I was going straight on at the lights 1/n
(that you subsequently went through) and you had two other lanes to pass me. Why did you feel the need to tailgate me, honk your horn, and punishment pass me? And then when I dared to suggest your level of driving was substandard, why did you feel the need to further 2/n
intimidate me by undoing your seat belt while still driving, open your door and swerve further towards me before speeding off through red lights? You are a dangerous driver and should not have a licence. But you will. You could accumulate 12 points on your driving licence 3/n
and still have a licence. You could seriously injure somebody and claim you didn't see them and nothing would happen to you. You could kill somebody speeding on the phone and get away with murder. Even if you did go to prison, it would be minimal. You'd be back on the road 4/n
in no time. Enough is enough. I will take the lane on every single road, no matter how wide if it makes me feel safer. If the opposite lane is clear, overtake me safely. If it's not, don't. So that's what I did after the first incident. Took the lane. On a road with 5/n
parked cars, well outside the door zone. Did that deter the next driver from getting angry? No. He also honked his horn at me three times before angrily passing. Inevitably, I caught him up 20 seconds later. "Why didn't you move out of my way? I honked three times!" 6/n
Where did he get? Nowhere. Upon explaining that I was where I was because I felt safer there and didn't want a driver to open their door into me, he didn't want to know. Enough. This sub standard ignorance has to stop. We need political will, a culture shift, 7/n
and we need it now. We need to make driving as difficult and uncomfortable and undesirable as possible. We need to roll out safe, segregated, cycle lanes on or adjacent to every main road. We need to make storage of motor vehicles difficult. 8/n
We need to ensure that speeding, mobile phone use, pavement parking, red light jumping is seriously and consistently punished. We need to make sure once somebody reaches 12 points, it's an immediate driving ban. 9/n
We need to make sure if somebody kills another human being with their motor vehicle, they're charged with manslaughter. 10/n
I've absolutely had enough of arriving at work/home shaking in tears because of the entitlement and ignorance of those who on a daily basis endanger my life. I'm a father, son, brother, husband. I'm a human being. Enough is enough.
Were things any different this evening? Nope. Close punishment passed by a driver who then had time to stop and explain that I should be to the side where parked cars are on a road barely wide enough to fit a car. 12/n
It's cold out, wet, miserable, endless swathes of standstill traffic that I have to navigate. In and out of drivers, many of whom are on their phone. And then to have a driver almost clip me. 13/n
A driver who then presumably for fear of me having more to say at the red lights up ahead arrogantly drove straight through. I will be reporting every single one of today's dangerous drivers. I will not stop until our children have safe streets everywhere.
