A thread on Attack On Titan final season and CGI in anime:
A lot of people are claiming that big parts of the trailer for aot season 4 is using CGI. This is partially true, but not in the way you expect.

Previous seasons of AOT has used lots of CGI, even if you did not notice. It was mostly used for backgrounds to allow more dynamic camera movements, and on objects like horses to fill scenes
(EX: everyone behind Erwin is CG, and most 3DMG scenes had CG backgrounds).

CGI was used in the same way in the trailer for the final season. Objects like the baseball, backgrounds for Erens titan and the Jaw titan, Piecks gun turrets. All of these were made in CG.
Now we come to the actual titans, there was only one instance of a titan being purely CGI. This instance was Armin's titan during this shot.
Many people wrongly claim that other titans were done with CGI, but I can quite comfortably say that they were not.

Now then, how do you tell CGI and 2D animation apart? Inconsistencies and stylistic tricks in the animation! 3D animation is done with models, and rendered by exact programs.
This guarantees that a model will always have the same level of detail, and look correct from any angle

This is almost impossible with 2d animation. Since characters here are just a 2d piece of paper, and it is up to multiple different animators to keep on model based on this.
This causes characters and objects to look different form shot to shot and from frame to frame.

2D animation also uses stylistic tricks that is hard to mimic with 3D animation. Smears, squash and stretch, exaggerated movements and limiting frame rates
are 2D tricks that are way less common or pronounced in 3D animation, especially anime CGI.

CGI animation in general looks way smoother, and keeps exact models frame to frame, never getting anatomy or construction wrong, and keeping the same level of detail no matter what is happening. Your brain mostly picks up these things automatically and gives you that CGI feel.
If the rumor is true that AOT The final season will only use CGI for titans, do not expect them to look like the trailer, but more like the characters in dorohedoro.
