#DescribeThePic

Photo on the left is what you see when you look at a photo.

Photo on the right is what a screen reader user sees when it doesn’t include an ALT text description.

Millions of photos are shared online. But so many of them don’t have an image description.
I have co launched a campaign for #InternationalDisabilityDay in collaboration with @sibbymeade

The campaign is called #DescribeThePic and it’s all about encouraging more people to add descriptions to their images shared online.
#DescribeThePic

It’s easy to add image descriptions on @Twitter

➡️ Choose your image to share.
➡️ Look on the right hand bottom corner for the bottom that says “ALT”.
➡️ Add your description.
➡️ Press “DONE”
➡️ Share it!

Then a screen reader user will know what the image is.
#DescribeThePic

When thinking about what description to add to your photo for a Blind of low vision person. Think about these things…

➡️ Who? Who is in the photo?
➡️What? What is in the photo?
➡️ Where? Where was the photo taken?
➡️ When? When was the photo taken?
#DescribeThePic

What are screen readers?
Screen readers are pieces of software that blind and low vision people use that turn their devices into a talking device.

What is all text?
ALT text is text that you would add to an image, which would be read out by a screen reader.
#DescribeThePic

This is what it would sound like to a screen reader user when someone shares an image with an ALT text description.

This video is a demonstration using VoiceOver on my iPhone.
