The increase in mental health concerns presenting to general practice is palpable. I had 8 mental health consultations yesterday, many worried about things outside of their control like Covid, financial concerns etc, but many due to external factors that could be helped by

everyone chipping in.

Cutting your employees some slack, being kinder when dealing with people eg customer service, shop assistants, receptionists (ours are definitely noticing more stressed people calling at wits end), recognising stress in others and asking them a

2/
gentle ‘how are things?’ If needed.

My biggest worry is the increase in children/teenagers/young adults presenting with mental health problems/eating disorders at such a young age, be it due to Covid sapping them of social outlets that keep them grounded, body-shaming

by other ‘friends’ or media portrayals of ‘beauty’, or the college student who is missing out on college/direction/purpose/guidance.

Throw in isolation, bereavement, anxiety and I’d say there’s not one person in Ireland who isn’t struggling or doesn’t know someone who is.

The collateral damage from Covid is affecting everyone. The fallout is huge, people are stressed, tense and struggling.

As a GP it’s a privilege try help people navigate these really difficult times, but sometimes it feels like swimming against the tide.

There needs to

5/
be more action and conversation on mental health and the collateral damage from Covid19, people are at breaking point and need urgent help.

We can all be kinder, keep an eye on friends/family, especially this Christmas, put them in touch with their GP/counsellors if needed.
