Forgotten tragedy:
Mubina Gani, a young newlywed and her pregnant aunt were detained and raped by BSF soldiers in May, 1990. It was Mubina's wedding day and all dressed as a bride, she was
all excited and happy to begin her new life. But even her dream, like other
women living in Kashmir had been shattered in the most inhumane way by the Indian Armed forces.
After dining and celebration, Mubina along with her husband and many other relatives boarded a bus and started travelling back to her in law's house. Hardly three kilometres into
their journey, the bus was halted by BSF soldiers. Immediately after getting into the bus,
they had ordered the driver to dim the lights and shot him on spot. The soldiers ruthlessly fired upon the passengers in the bus injuring everyone present. After the guns fell silent,
Mubina and her pregnant aunt were dragged to the nearby fields and gang raped. The nightmare didn't end at the rape but Mubina was further detained for 48 hours. Even after this brutal incident, the government had the audacity to claim that the bus has been caught in cross-fire"
It was only when this event was well publicized in the local and international press, the state and central authorities ordered an inquiry. However, though the medical reports
reports concluded that both the women were gang raped, the security forces were never brought to trial.
Kyunki, yehi toh Democracy hai and that's how "integral" part is treated.
