I also remember the USD at „360 in 1970, when I was living in Kobe. The world changes.
My allowance ranged between „1000-1200 per week. On Saturdays, I would go to movies, sushi, okonomiyaki, beeru, ofuru and have enough to share a taxi home with friends. Living the hi-life.
In the mid 1980s I traded the yen all the way down to 220 for my company, hedging petrochemical and crude shipments and for my own speculative account. Bouncing between SF to Tokyo every 6 weeks. Awesome expense acct.
Most biz was with Japanese petrochem co. and Shosha like Mitsui, Toyomenka, Mitsubishi. Would pay in „ and I would hedge rec'ables so nothing was lost to currency fluctuation. Sold alkylbenzenes to the soapers around PacRim to make laundry detergent. P&G and Lever too.
Paraxylene was the whale, used to make polyester which is in everything. Tanker ships with 1000s metric tonnes of the stuff.
