Deeply concerned about broad + longlasting impact of school closures, including:

1. closures a/w learning losses (esp literacy), achievement gaps between and within high- and low-income settings
2. Virtual learning a/w inequities in access and pedagogical preparedness

3. 11M girls may not return to school
4. Disproportionate impact on women in the workforce
5. Educators have needed more resources to support more kids who've fallen more behind. But larger classes, less hands-on/collaborative learning, redeployment make this hard to achieve.

Then there was @salimah_shivji's report tonight on @CBCTheNational

Prolonged shutdown and school closures in India = higher risk of abandonment/child trafficking.

Closures are generally considered a last (effective) resort to ⬇️COVID19 in the community. But they violate education as a human right in a population that has no voice at decision-making tables.

It's also a false dilemma - education is fundamental to the public's health.

We value education as an essential service (legislatn aside)

To prevent further disruptions, we need more multisectoral, resilient service planning to ensure safety (testing, PH measures) and access (virtual/in-person).
