/n Some times your startup DOESN’T need to worry about BigCo going into your space
/n If it’s not their core product it’s likely a B team, not an A team. Most A+ engineers at Google work on incrementally improving Ads monetization or crawling infra optimization etc.
/n Incentives are screwy. Example: Microsoft prescribing silly game mechanics to the team building Stormlands to better show off the XBox One Kinect hardware. The other studios just focus on fun
/n Mr. BigCo is subject to the vicissitudes of his manager, company politics, and quarterly earnings. No one will tell Mr. BigCo’s boss the product sucks
/n In software development, more bodies doesn’t usually make building faster. Small and mighty teams! Most venture backed Co’s that become franchise businesses ship v1 with <20 people in product
/n Big companies are often so enamored by their own scope they ignore the fragmentation of the real world, and won’t build neutrally. See Okta vs. Microsoft
/n innovators dilemma - just read the book. Worth twice!
/8 When you do have to worry: BigCo has a distribution machine, fast, competent and protected product team, high conviction leadership, your area is a p1 for them and the innovation doesn’t threaten their business model
