I think a strong case can be made that, in the present context, a mask mandate is a libertarian position. Carelessly spreading a potentially deadly virus is a serious rights violation.
The case for a mask mandate (in this context) is much stronger than is the case for a seatbelt mandate - and yet we don't see Republicans refusing to wear their seatbelts because "muh freedom."
However, I'll add that Ed Quillen made a pretty good case that a seatbelt mandate is justified. He argued that a person not wearing a seatbelt poses a danger to others by more easily losing control of the vehicle. (Anyway that's in the context of state-owned roads.)
I also find it remarkable how much some people seem to care about resisting mask mandates. As a matter of pure self-interest, wear a mask in public! If government mandates that I don't chop off my pinkie finger without medical reason I'm not going to chop it off in protest.
