My last comment on this for a while at least is that I don't think any analysis of the effects of "defund the police" are complete without looking at the numerous and growing state and local victories of explicitly decarceral candidates, *especially* in prosecutor elections.
This electoral movement and success goes hand-in-hand with the energy, messaging, and activism and I don't think you see the sweeping change if those didn't exist.
(many of these candidates ran, to different degrees, explicitly on defund the police platforms)
Anyway this is a gigantic shift in a very quick period of time and other than a group of committed and excellent journalists (especially @Taniel) it’s gone largely under the radar https://theappeal.org/politicalreport/criminal-justice-reform-2020-election-results/
