I think bout combating imposter syndrome and having confidence as an Asian-living-in-Asia femme creative and so far, here's what has helped: (thread)
I can't afford to lack confidence in myself & my art because of who I am. My body. Most places expect me to be meek, quiet and deferral cos of Orientalist stereotypes AND socio-cultural expectations within my own community. I'm not going to give them that pleasure of being right
The ppl who are doing the most damage to the planet, economy, the internet and the creative arts don't have imposter syndrome! Who gives them the right?? WTH? They should have the imposter syndrome, not me!
"God grant me the confidence of a mediocre white (cis) man"
There's so much joy in being proud of your work. No it's not about it being perfect or epic. It's not even about ego most times. Developing happiness/pride in your work is asserting your ownership and connection to the labour capitalism wants to alienate you from.
Loving your work should heal and encourage you, not break you. I always believe passion is bout taking care of yourself so your work becomes sustaining. And in order to do that, you gotta be confident in your value and what you are able to do.
This is more Malaysian/SEA-centric, but: lacking confidence in your labour/value and attempting to fix that insecurity via approval from authority (gotta impress the boss!!) is the recipe for exploitation. I reject that.
