#RealTalkWednesday Alright y'all want some real talk, I'll give you some real talk. Being a Black scientist is exhausting. First of all people talk over me ALL the time. Q & As are sometimes a minefield of people making me "prove" I know what I'm talking about.
People say dumb things like you're only here to meet a quota. I'm tokenized and trivialized. On top of ALL that people try to downplay my experience by saying things like "I don't think they meant it like that" or whatever. Then along comes the white wave in the BLM movement...
I've said it before and I've said it again if you didn't feel the need to express Black people had value until this summer, better late than never I guess but y'all are about 200 years late to the party and some of y'all ain't even brought snacks.
So all these universities want to invite Black scientists to speak suddenly. First of all you should have been doing that this whole time. Second of all yall can't suddenly bombard us all at once. Third of all pay 👏 us 👏 for👏our👏time👏. Stop being stingy
ESPECIALLY if you want us to talk DEI or do any sort of emotional labor. If you're going to parade our Blackness in front of your little department to check a box and pat yourself on the back for taking a baby step forward, compensate us.
I worked hard, my time is valuable and so am I. I volunteer my time to uplift my community and inspire young scientists. I am here to support underfunded schools and underserved communities. I am not here to volunteer my time to well funded universities that just don't wanna pay
I said what I said. 'Exposure' doesn't pay the bills. My family never got their 40 acres and a mule, but I'm here to get it now. I'm reclaiming my time and my energy. If you have power in your department. Please fight to compensate speakers. #RealTalkWednesday
PS this is a passionate tweet not an angry one. Imma just say that to head off the stereotype threat. But even if I were angry that's my prerogative and Black women have just as much right to be angry as anyone else without it being a whole thing. That's all. Send tweet
