I love Spotify Wrapped and seeing my weird little stats, but given the investigation going on into the ethics of streaming I did some digging. (I just got bored and did maths, I know what’s wrong with me.)
Say you’re an average Spotify Premium subscriber on the £10 a month plan. You give Spotify £120 a year and Spotify give the artists you listen to on average £0.0025 a stream.
If you wanted to ensure your entire £120 went to artists you would have to stream 48,000 songs a year!

And don’t forget to make sure you weren’t playing the same song or artist too many times in a row incase it gets flagged as ‘bot behaviour’. So you gotta make a whole playlist stagger them out and take a break every now and then.
Say the average song is 3:30. That’s 168,000 minutes, 2800 hours or 7 hours 35 minutes of streaming every day for the whole year.
The consumer has to pull a 9-5 shift listening to tracks in order for their favourite artist to get a little over a ton.

Buy the album, get a ticket, cop a T-shirt. The whole thing’s fucked. #SpotifyWrapped
