So, I think it is vitally important that all geology programs really step back and think how they can stay relevant. We can’t all lean back and say “get ‘em ready for field camp!” The places our students go after college is very different than 10, 20 years ago 1/n
This is both in professional careers where environment and climate are rapidly becoming the major employer and for graduate school where our students rarely go to do a heavily field based masters or PhD anymore. 2/n
I’ve said this before: the earth sciences are central to so much of life and society. If we can’t sell that to students today, then we are in major trouble. This means we all need to do outreach, get kids excited in the field and most importantly … 3/n
Make our field much more diverse and inclusive. Honestly, jettisoning the old cliches and stereotypes of geology needs to happen and soon if we don’t want to see more departments go the way of the dinosaur. 4/4
