Who likes great COVID news? I’m going to tell you anyway…Telemedicine…(thread/hilo 1/n)
/n Baked into the rare disease world is that it’s unlikely there’s a local expert (unless you live in a few, select metro areas). Most people on Earth do not.
/n @CincyChildrens and @CincyKidsGenomX we see families from all over the US and world. Before COVID, most had to fly or drive here to be seen.
/n Our Division piloted telemedicine over the last few years. So when COVID happened, we had some attendings and genetic counselors that were prepared, including a telemedicine ninja, Carlos. Carlitos, what’s the Spanish term for ‘ninja’? Ninjito?
/n Last *year*, we did ~2,000 visits by telemedicine.
/n This *week* we will do a minimum of ~4,000, but probably closer to ~6,000. COVID.
/n But it goes beyond that. Not only does that family 20 minutes away get access, that family 4 hours away does too.
/n And so does the family that’s 4,000 miles away, the topic of this paper.
/n There are many issues, medical licensing across states can be a hassle, much less across countries.
/n There are issues with reimbursement, insurance, connectivity, etc. But these are manageable, and things are changing for the better. #TakeThat2020
