There was a question in Q&A of @TransformAnthro webinar w/ @biancaphd & A. Lynn Bolles that we didn't have time to answer. It was about the role of the Black grad student mentee in departments with no Black anthropologists who may have to seek out Black mentors in other depts.
Such an important question. I wouldn't want the grad student to worry about that. You need the support, so reach out. It is up to us to say No when we need to, but honestly, even when folks are very busy, we decide what is important to us and what we want to spend our time on...
9 times out of 10, mentoring a Black grad student who needs us would be something that we would want to do, that we would say No to other things to make time for. Just like Dr. Bolles said she reviewed 5 tenure cases one summer b/c she knew how important it was...
Then again, I don't mentor many grad students since I'm at Spelman, so maybe @biancaphd, @drkeishakhan or @profsassy @KiaLCaldwell and others who have grad students would have other thoughts.
