scratch a TERF/SWERF, find a white supremacist. we dont need to dig that far into history to understand this. they reveal it themselves thru their analyses & the fash they align with. the fact that the majority of TERF/SWERFs in this world are predominantly white says it all. https://twitter.com/zeinmurib/status/1334178643115970563
TERF/SWERF fascism is an inherently global north, western, white eurocentric phenomenon. in other parts of the world, we will not find the same organized efforts to wedge right-wing ideology w/i local feminist organizing like we do in Canada, USA, UK, Australia, & New Zealand.
thats not to say that transmisogyny & sex worker antagonism does not exist elsewhere. @TransRespect has clearly laid out that the majority of the murders of trans women & trans femmes (over half of whom are SWers) are in Brazil, Honduras, Mexico & many global south countries.
TERF/SWERF ideology, however, has specific roots and history in white, carceral 'feminism'. its why we dont generally see the same violent, organized campaigns against trans women & sex workers in feminist movements in global south countries, with few exceptions.
its not something we can demonstrate with evidence or proof right now - its what we have heard from people who have been in these spaces who tell us that the energy is not the same.
that said, its not a leap to hypothesize that the growing TERF/SWERF sentiment in Brazil and, more recently, Mexico is directly linked to the import of TERF/SWERF ideology from white 'feminists' and cis women of colour living in western, global north countries.
like... where else could they get "radfem" from? https://twitter.com/madeleinewhat/status/1331727278108274690
this is a relevant and important piece of writing that includes the voices & perspectives of Black trans women from the African continent and reflects on how anti-trans women/TERF sentiment is linked to white Western feminism: https://twitter.com/keguro_/status/1328579964699021312
