Okay gonna start this soon if you care about this kinda music I hope you'll provide your own favorites and if you don't like this kinda music I hope you check out these songs because they're super important to me and helped shape who I am. https://twitter.com/MattRoth732/status/1334246663226068996
Okay starting with one of my favorite bands in The Replacements. From Minneapolis, this is honestly the most difficult decision. They have such an extensive catalogue and Paul Westerberg is an incredible lyricist.
The Smiths are controversial only because Morrissey is tone deaf and also a terrible person but This Charming Man is just one of those songs that is timeless to me because of Johnny Marr's guitar.
Joy Division is a lot easier for me than The Replacements. Admittedly I'm choosing their most widely known hit because Ian Curtis' voice is just haunting. It's somehow a pop song while being absolutely depressing.
The Cure is again one of those really easy choices for me. I'm always going to be someone who focuses on a singer's ability to connect with an audience and Robert Smith's lyrics and voice just kill me every time.
Weird choice I know but this song is one of my favorites. The chorus is incredible and the video is a dance fight with monsters? I think?
Okay leaving synths for fast pace punk and where better to start than The Misfits? Controversial because Danzig sucks but this song is a love song while also a murder song? Those tend to be the best kind of songs.
Taking a small break before I move into the 90s which had a huge impact on me. Sorry have to walk dogs.
HEY! I'M BACK!
Let's start with Atom & His Package! Okay this is really tough because I love Adam and his goofy songs but honestly the choice is Punk Rock Academy. It's a perfect songs. And as a kid in high school who felt different, it's a song for me.

I'm from New Jersey so I'm gotta talk about *THE* Jersey band that influenced everyone that followed and that's Lifetime. Jersey's Best Dancers is a perfect record and it's breakneck from the jump.
.....
.....
Jawbreaker, like The Replacements, is just one of those bands that had a huge influence on me and this single choice is nearly impossible. I'm going with "Want" because it's a love song and really showcases Blake's lyric style.
I know how I got into Sunny Day Real Estate. I walked into a record store and told them I was just getting into a few 2000s emo bands and the guys at the counter didn't let me buy anything unless I bought Diary. It was game over for me from there.
Everyone likes Ska right? I kinda like Ska. The first of my favorite Ska bands is Goldfinger and if you expected me to say anything but Superman you're an idiot. It's THE best song they've ever written.
The other ska song that I just love way too much is from Less Than Jake. Losing Streak is a perfect record and 9th and Pine is the best song on that record. Also I'm a fan of any band that has a dancer(?) that's part of the band.
Hot Water Music and more specifically Chuck Ragan just kinda kills me. There's a discussion of their best record but for me it's No Division and Rooftops is just the song that I'll always go nuts for whenever I hear it. Perfect for sing-alongs.
The Promise Ring - Jersey Shore was an obvious choice for me. It's just a great song on a great record.
American Football - Never Meant. I remember listening to LP1 the first time in high school and I just couldn't process what I was listening to. There's so much going on with this album and this song is a kick in the feelings.
AFI - God Called in Sick Today. I've joked (not actually a joke) that I'd love to sing this at karaoke but it lives and dies by crowd participation. This is *the* song I think of when I talk about AFI. And it lives and dies by the Wha-ohs.
Alkaline Trio - Crawl. Talk about a kick in the gut. They have so many great songs and honestly this is a tough choice but Crawl is a perfect closer and the best example of a Dan song. Also Dan is better than Matt Skiba.
Midtown - Come On. Fuck, I loved Midtown in high school. I saw them live with Fenix Tx and saw them way too many times because Gabe's brother promoted shows. Shout out to Bomb Shelter shows.
The Bouncing Souls - That Song. Okay so again, from Jersey and I'm sure my friends will disagree or have their own favorite Bouncing Souls song. Here's what I know...there's no wrong answer.
My Chemical Romance - Sunsets Over Monroeville.
Their first record was so ballsy for a debut record. It's a rock opera about the zombie apocalypse. Gerard Way is super weird but as a song writer he's unstoppable.

Murder By Death - Lost River.
You wanna talk about a beautiful song, it's this one. It's haunting. Murder By Death has so many choices but this seems like the one song that I'll return to no matter my mental state.

Piebald - American Hearts
I fucking love Piebald. Like way too much. Like I snuck into a show at MIT because I love them so much. Like I saw them play at a Kaiju Big Battel show love them. This is a perfect song on a perfect record.

Thursday - War All The Time
I don't know if this is controversial but this is my favorite Thursday song. The album was a flop but this is Geoff at his best. It's everything I want in a song. It's not what got me into the band but it brings me back to them.

Alexisonfire - .44 Caliber Love Letter
This is the best opening track ever. I don't want to discuss this any further. It's an slow 2 minutes of build before just kicking you in the face. I love this band so much. Please tour when music can happen again.

Coheed & Cambria - Neverender
I remember belting this song out with @flostronaut666 one night while he played drums on my car's interior. This is the best Coheed song. Listen to Coheed. They rule.

Okay so here's the point where I write a very quick disclaimer. I recognize that the next few bands and songs are extremely problematic. The screamo/emo scene in the early 2000s was full of misogyny and unfortunately those lyrics shaped younger me. It sucks.
Brand New - Sic Transit Gloria
This is a very problematic song by a problematic band but it's still a song that shaped me. I wish they stayed a pop punk band because the problematic lyrics were hidden by catchy choruses like Jude Law & Seventy times 7.

Taking Back Sunday - Cute Without the E
I love this song and I hate this song and I honestly have trouble coming to terms with it because it's so catchy yet the lyrics are terrible. This whole album is rough. Again...it sucks this shaped my youth.

New Found Glory - Boy Crazy
Last of the problematic era for me. Super problematic band. Like just listen to it. It fucking sucks. But that was the general attitude towards girls/women in the scene in the early 2000s.

Okay that part is over. I'm gonna call it quits soon but I'm gonna mention some current bands that I just love because the general message in music has changed from the early 2000s to now. I wish I was 18 now, I think I'd be a more well-adjusted person.
Jeff Rosenstock - Pash/Rash
Jeff rules. He's positive and a defeatist and his songs speak to me. Just one of those great musician that always makes me reevaluate things after seeing him.

PUP - Dark Days
There's a lot of great songs by this band but this one is the one that really hits me. Just love them. I hope 18 year olds know how fortunate they are to have them.

Julien Baker - Go Home
I've cried seeing Julien play this song live. I sat outside of the venue for what felt like hours just trying to process what I saw and listened to. She fucked me up that much.

Ceschi - Say Something
Ceschi has such an incredible story and if you want to understand how broken the legal system is in this country read about him. This song describes a bit of it.

IDLES - Television
I love this band. They are the best band right now and explore ideas that should be discussed more often like toxic masculinity and body image. This is a song about impossible beauty standards.
