Why trans headcanons are so prominent in the Splatoon community- a thread, to help better explain to people who are confused. Rts appreciated! 🦑
As we all know, a lot of people in the Splatoon community identify with the LGBTQ+ community, with a majority of those people being trans in some way, myself included. We enjoy the game for the diversity and lack of canonity in character genders/sexualities.
This allows for even more diversity in the fan content being put out for all to see and enjoy. Of course, this includes the Squid Sisters/Off The Hook, as everyone who has played Splatoon or at least done a little research knows that they’re the idols of the games.
As you’ve seen today, the Callie is trans headcanon (NOTE: HEADCANON!) has been circulating and this is what prompted me to make this thread. I noticed it’s mainly people who aren’t trans questioning the legitimacy of this headcanon and why it exists. That’s honestly okay!
It’s good to ask questions to get involved with the trans community. I haven’t seen anyone get shut down for asking anything which makes me incredibly happy, because people are being educated. However, I’m not just referring to that.
There’s often waves of “I’m trans” posts in the in-game plaza, and there’s a lot of discourse about that, but I know you’re all wondering about the relevance of all of this being brought to light. I guess it’s about time to explain, yeah?
The reason why trans headcanons are rather popular is because of personal experiences in the eyes of the beholder. For example, I h/c Callie as trans because as she’s famous, her gender roles are likely going to be switched. But for someone else, they might think of it different
because of the extreme diversity in the community. It’s all just a personal experience with a character and you wanting to relate to that character more, especially considering the lack of transgender representation in the community. HOWEVER! I had this point brought up to me.
Someone told me that they felt a little worried about how this could affect LGBTQ+ representation and if it would be forced. This should explain why headcanons ≠ corporate LGBTQ+ representation
It’s a way for trans people to connect with a character because of circumstances in which they can’t feel comfortable being themselves. It’s a coping mechanism and it’s a very healthy one at that! If an experience someone has relates to a character’s experience, they grow fond.
They start to like the character more and apply real world situations to them. This is also a brief dumbed down explanation of a comfort character although other people have different definitions, it also applies here.
In conclusion, the trans headcanons are mostly made by trans individuals just to feel more safe in their skin. It makes a character more likeable to them, and makes them feel happy! For some, it helps the person relate more, and that is totally fine.
A simple reminder that you do not have to share the same headcanon with anyone at all! It is totally fine to think of someone as a cisgendered individual (as long as they aren’t confirmed) because you don’t share those same experiences.
I would appreciate you guys Retweeting this and giving your own personal thoughts on this. I want to help educate people who are confused on all of this. If you have no questions though, I hope you all have a wonderful rest of your day/night. 🐙
