1. Sesshomaru constantly rejected Tenseiga because it lacked destructive power and was unlike the Tessaiga, which it was separated from

2. Tenseiga was left to Sesshomaru with the intention of "healing" and "freeing" Sesshomaru's spirit of his obsession with power, his attachment to Tessaiga, and his resentment towards his father and Inuyasha.
3. It has been confirmed that Tenseiga is sentient, and it has a will of its own. However, it was impossible for Tenseiga to fulfill its intended task if Sesshomaru constantly rejected/ignored it.
4. When Sesshomaru was nearly killed by Inuyasha, he was put in a position where he would be immobile, completely vulnerable and had so little yoki/energy, he could possibly be more susceptible and receptive to change.

5. Tenseiga had the ability to transport Sesshomaru anywhere that he would have been safe. A cave, a mountain top. yet brought him to the forest, close enough to a human village, where not only he would be safe, he would IMMEDIATELY meet Rin. He wasn't even fully conscious yet!
6. We can speculate that Tenseiga, being from beyond this world, does not act on just mere sentience, but with clairsentience, claircognizance, and clairvoyance.

These were used to orchestrate its plan for Sesshomaru.

8. With Tenseiga likely being clairvoyant, it's possible that it had already predicted Sesshomaru would have a near death experience. But he wasn't the only one who was approaching death. So was Rin.

9. It's said that when you're near death your energy field changes.
This could mean that Tenseiga's clairsentience was able to feel Rin's energy more strongly, causing it to resonate with her, and choose her as a vital person that would impact Sesshomaru and change his course.

10. Rin had approximately 2 days before she was going to die, and Sesshomaru was going to recover. That was all she had to have enough of an impact on such a cold demon, to permanently affect his destiny.

11. Tenseiga had a common bond with Rin. Analyzing Rin's character throughout the series, you can speculate that Rin may be an empath/empathic.

13. Empath(ic) traits Tenseiga shared with Rin

14. Most humans would have run. Instead, Rin gulped, mustered her strength, and approached Sesshomaru. She offered anything she could, because like Tenseiga, Rin wanted to help/save Sesshomaru, and valued his life. In a time when demons were feared, Rin's generosity was rare.
15. As predicted by Tenseiga, Rin was able to succeed in her limited amount of time, and in turn, Tenseiga relayed to Sesshomaru that Rin's life was important as well.
It's also interesting that Sesshomaru drew tenseiga without hesitation once he remembered her smile.

16. Sesshomaru himself probably could not understand what he felt in that moment, but Rin's empathic energy impacted him deeply enough to cause him to draw Tenseiga.

17. Tenseiga, of course, predicted this, hence why the chain of events flowed so fluidly. From his near death experience, to their encounter, to her death, to her revival, to his personal growth/healing. Tenseiga chose Rin because, well...Rin was like Tenseiga, in human form.
