Dare I do my first #tabletopchopshop?
I'm going to brain blast my thoughts on how to implement a Season Pass for a modular game like LIGHT, on itch.
I'm going to brain blast my thoughts on how to implement a Season Pass for a modular game like LIGHT, on itch.
Quick refresher if you don't know what I'm talking about. LIGHT is a modular rules-lite Destiny inspired RPG I released on itch recently. Right now it has the core rules, and 4 modules released. You can find it here: https://gilarpgs.itch.io/light
I did a thread about this topic recently, and the poll showed an overwhelming number of people were interested in the proposed Season Pass idea, compared to a more traditional platform like Patreon. Small sample size, but it's the data I've got. https://twitter.com/GilaRPGs/status/1333599993773649920
So, what does a Season Pass look like? I imagine posting up a new game page on itch, called LIGHT: Season 1. It's a basic description of LIGHT, links to the main game page so that folks can get the rules. And then it describes what a season is, and what you can expect to get.
Let's say a season is 4 months long. Across that season, you'll get 4 modules for LIGHT (~1 per month). You don't know what the modules will be, but I would like to have a theme so that you have some idea based on the description on the Season 1 game page.
The season is sold sort of as a preorder. You can buy it before any releases, on the cheap. Let's say $8. Once the season begins, and the first module drops, buying the season pass costs $10.
As modules are released, they get added to that game page, and eventually you'll have 4 modules there. Anyone who buys the season pass, at any time during the season, will have access to all 4 modules. You just are incentivized to preorder for the discount.
Now, the modules will be sold ala carte, in case you don't want the pass. They'll be listed as a collection on my itch page. But they'll be pricier, $3-5 each. So the deal is definitely in getting the pass, but if you don't want to, you're not locked out of the modules.
At the end of the season, I would like to offer some sort of printed version. Season pass owners would get a coupon code sent to them to get the print on the cheap, compared to those who buy it separately.
Still working out that one.

As the season wraps up, there would be a preview of what is to come in Season 2, and that game page would get posted, ready to take preorders. Repeat the process throughout the year and you've got about 3 seasons worth of modules!
Ideally, it all gets bundled together into LIGHT: Year 1, and that is sold digitally, and put together in a nice zine (also with a coupon code for season pass holders).
So that's my idea for season passes. It keeps everything on the one platform of itch, but the idea is essentially untested as far as I can tell.
That's my TED talk, aka #tabletopchopshop. Would love to hear folks thoughts on the idea!
