This is the thing for me as well. The main reason I don't have a Sp0tify subscription is because the monthly fee would dwarf my royalties. I guess it's a pride thing to at least be making some sort of a profit off of that website. https://twitter.com/clppng/status/1334065512360210433?s=20
Be interesting to see if the algorithms fall out of favour for those folks badmouthing the site. I guess a fear of that sort of thing is why these kinds of posts from musicians are not more widespread.
It feels like when Napster came along and offered people a way to cheat on buying physical media. Back then there was more of a sense of guilt, that one might pick up an LP to support an artist after falling in love with their pirated work.
Today, in an age of utterly devalued music, a £9.95 monthly fee offers a warm glow to those using what feels like a piracy subscription service, a feeling that one has “put a bit back” to access more music than anyone could ever listen to.
If you have posted a “2020 in music” graphic, please consider supporting your top artist(s) by buying an LP/CD/7”/tape, paid download, merch, or even a Patreon subscription or ko-fi tip - even just once, even if you have done so already. Being a musician is perilous as hell!
