#PayUpHollywood update! We’re 2 weeks into collecting data from our Support Staff survey. Here’s a peak of the numbers so far:

In LA, making under $53,600/yr is considered rent burdened. But in 2020, 79.17% of support staff made less than $50k. 34.99% made less than $30k (1/?)
(I’ll explain what it means to be rent burdened at the end)

75.16% now cover work expenses out of pocket (purchasing laptops, paying for printers/ink/paper, increased utilities, etc) because of WFH.

But 49.47% have received ZERO compensation for these expenses. (2/?)
From June 2019 to today, 57.54% of respondents have not reported overtime or sought reimbursement for fear of negative repercussions.

So at more than HALF of all support staffers lost money rightfully due to them because of possible employer backlash. (3/?)
And more than a dozen assistants reported objects thrown at them (fruit, staplers, etc.)

STOP THROWING THINGS AT HUMAN BEINGS FULL STOP. (4/?)
The #PayUpHollywood Support Staff Survey is open until Dec. 18th. If you are a support staff working in entertainment please consider signing up. This data exposed the inequalities, issues and abuses of the most vulnerable in Hollywood. https://forms.gle/sJC2yNNQ1ux3KiV87 (5/?)
Also, I'm trying to keep professional. But it's hard. It's really hard not to get emotional. Everyone's had a hard year. But the thought of pulling in less than 30k a year, in a pandemic, so you can get a stapler thrown at your head...

It doesn't have to be this way. (6/?)
Results from the survey will be published in the New Year.

But this holiday season -- please, please, please gift your support staffers cash. This goes for everybody in the industry, not just writers and reps. Wine is great but it won’t pay the rent. (7/7)
And for those curious about being “Rent Burdened”....

"Rent burdened" = you make less than 3x your current rent for the year. So if your rent is $500 a month, then 500*12*3 = $18,000 is what you would need to make so you are not rent burdened. SO -
Most SS have a roomie. The article below (from July) lists the average LA 2bd as $2,960/month.

If your rent is $1,480/m, then $53,280 is what you must make to avoid being rent burdened (slight difference from above, but rents decreased this year) https://www.livabl.com/2020/07/pandemic-pricing-los-angeles-rents.html
You can do all the right things - live cheap, have a roommate, etc. And you will STILL struggle to live in this city based on current salaries.

And if you're from a group that historically underprivileged? Of course you can't make it here.
I don't want to leave out all the people who have and continue to make a difference - companies and people in power who are working HARD to improve salary and conditions for support staff in Hollywood. There are so many great stories that have been shared. But -
We're looking to undo issues baked into the very foundation in Hollywood. It's a long, long road. And the only way we can do it is to get as much data as we can from as many support staffers who will come forward for the #PayUpHollywood survey.
