THREAD — When I was in undergrad, I was a reporter for the @TheCrimsonWhite where I had a lot of fun and memorable assignments.
I got to interview and write about Alabama’s first Black scholarship athlete, Wendell Hudson, who eventually became coach of the women’s bball team, which was my main beat for a couple years. He was also the first UA athlete to have his jersey retired.
@Marq_Burnett would let me cover some football games, too, lol. It was pretty cool watching games at Bryant Denny from the press box.
Nick Saban was also very nice to me in the press room after the game. That mattered to me because some people think he hates media and because I was the only Black woman in the room.
I am grateful for the times and experiences I had at UA as a sports reporter, etc. and as I’ve grown, gotten older and been in a number of different newsrooms, etc., I have seen the need for increased diversity and equitable practices.
I am glad to join a group of people who are seeking to advocate for diversity and equity within student media at the University of Alabama.
The organization is called MASTHEAD (Media Alumni Seeking to Highlight Equity and Diversity) and we are led by the great @VLuck.
Please check out the website at http://alabamamasthead.com  to learn more about the organization, what we are doing and how you can assist/get involved. We would love your support in helping to foster lasting change in an imperative industry.
I’m also the organizer of the mentor program that has partnered with @1956Magazine this year. If you’re a journalist, media, film professional interested in being a part of it please reach out.
We recently had a powerful conversation with @XLNB and more planned for next year. ✨
We also have amazing mentors like @JasmineMonet_, @KQueenTorbert, @LitaStarr, @Marq_Burnett, @i_HeartT, @Amethyst_Holmes, @KaLeahRodgers and others who have graciously volunteered their time and expertises! ❤️
It’s been a little while since I was in the Bryant Denny press box, but I’m glad to be able to assist current students in this way.
