I tell the Toomer's Oaks story every year when I teach herbicide MOA in class. https://twitter.com/malherbologist/status/1332823030498783233
Dr. Stephen Enloe, now at Florida, was a weed scientist at Auburn at the time. He moved to Auburn from Wyoming. Before everything was public, he called and we discussed the trees.
He told me what the tissue and soil concentrations levels were. And my exact words to him:

"Dude... those trees are TOAST."
I wasn't alone in that prediction apparently. In this interview, at around 4:00 mark, he says "every expert I've talked to around the country are discouraged" when he tells them the concentrations. I presume his other colleagues were more tactful than me.
He even laughs when he says "They didn't offer a lot of... hope." Which I guess is very consistent with "Dude, those trees are toast."
All that said, Stephen did a really good job in the interviews surrounding this tree poisoning. Much better than I would have done, for sure.
