/8 COURT NEWS: I met a group of "auditors" outside Leeds Mags Court today. Like me, they were carrying cameras and said they were covering the same case. But they'd arrived late and missed the defendant's arrival.
/8 They told me I should put my work on Youtube, that it's a good living, that someone they know made $7,000 doing "auditing" on Youtube last month.
/8 Then then chased after the wrong man, videoing and shouting abuse at him about the case as he queued outside the court.
/8 I sat in on the hearing. The "auditors" didn't. The defendant's barrister asked the Judge to impose restrictions limiting the publication of their client's ID. He's a policeman facing a serious charge and fears retribution. The Judge rejected the application.
/8 After the hearing I photographed the defendant leaving. The "auditors" ignored him. Minutes later the wrong man came out. They videoed him as he walked to his car, shouting abuse along the way and through his windscreen as he left.
/8 One of the "auditors" was wearing a Leeds University lanyard. I warned them to check the ID before publishing, that they had the wrong man. They didn't believe me, even when I told them I'd confirmed it in court.
/8 They also said it wouldn't matter if they did have the wrong man, that it would be his fault for not correcting them as they videoed him coming and going.
/8 Still, $7k in a month.
