As a lawyer at a corporate law firm, I reject this view. Lawyers should be judged based on the legal principles that they advance for their clients.

To be sure, Katyal should not be attacked for promoting child slavery. That of course is not his position. But trying to eviscerate the Alien Tort Claims Act? Fair game. To be sure, Katyal's position may well be a reasonable (quite possibly winning) one. 2/
But the idea that lawyers can disassociate themselves from the legal principles that they advocate is just not right. 3/
