For those who have no clue on Pakistani
politics, here’s a simplified explanation as per my understanding which literally nobody has for.
There are three main political parties at present:
PTI - Centre Right (Governing)
PMLN - Centre Right
PPP - Centre Left https://twitter.com/ibrownlad/status/1334137190134243329

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was founded by ex-cricketer @ImranKhanPTI and has over 10m members.
His only ambition has always been to improve his country.
The party has great appeal amongst the younger generation of the country, who form majority of the country.

Pakistan Muslim League N (PMLN) - I don’t even know where to begin with these guys.
It’s run by the Sharif family, probably one of the wealthiest families of Pakistan.
Popular amongst some of the older generation, Pakistani liberals and wealthy individuals.

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) is probably the oldest political party, currently led by @BBhuttoZardari - son of late Benazir Bhutto and Zardari.
Similarly to the PMLN, it’s also run by one of the wealthiest families and the leadership has mostly been Bhutto family members.

Both PMLN and PPP have governed previously on numerous occasions but it has always been messy...
Basically no democratically elected Pakistani Prime Minister has ever survived a full Parliament term!
Either they were ousted by a military coup or disqualified!

Nawaz Sharif (PMLN) was imprisoned on corruption (& other charges) in 1999 by military dictator Musharraf following a coup.
He was wealthy with contacts all over. The Saudis did a deal and came to rescue. He lived in exile in Saudi Arabia for seven years.

Upon returning from exile, he was finally re-elected in 2013 and led the country until 2017.
Remember Panama Papers?
Revelations in PPs lead to Pakistani Supreme Court disqualifying Nawaz Sharif as PM for acts of corruption.

It is widely known how corrupt the Sharifs are, Panama leaks just made it official.
They stole wealth from poor people of Pakistan and bought lots of property and business abroad, including Mayfair. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5878097/Former-prime-minister-Pakistan-sons-ploughed-millions-Londons-swankiest-addresses.html

Before I move onto what happened after, I shall elaborate on the third party...PPP which claims to be a socialist, left wing party.
When in government, they always failed and probably more corrupt than Nawaz Sharif et al.

When Benazir Bhutto was the PM, her husband Zardari (who later also become President), used to charge 10% commission
for giving out government contracts without transparent tenders.
The couple also stacked their wealth abroad including Swiss banks.

In 2018, following a 22 year long campaign, Imran Khan was elected as the Prime Minister of Pakistan.
This man did not belong to a super wealthy political family, and neither is he businessman.
He won the vote purely on an anti-corruption campaign.
Perfectly said by ex-wife: https://twitter.com/jemima_khan/status/1022371492338782209

Imran Khan inherited the country’s Current Account at -$19 billion (correct me if I am wrong as I’m not great at economy side of things).
He has an immense task of bringing a huge change in government departments which are led by corrupt bureaucrats implanted by previous govs.

Imagine picking up a mess with decades of corruption in every part of the society.
A system which favoured the wealthy and elite. Contracts and jobs give on ‘sifarish’ rather than merit.
Corruption is sadly a mindset of Pakistani people and it’s not going to change over night.

The current government is trying to implement changes but not in the phase it promised.
