Anaesthetists are brilliant at collecting data quickly

A thread on the Anaesthesia and Critical Care COVID Activity tracking survey (ACCC track round 1) looking at how hospitals and departments worked in October 2020

@emirakur @jas_soar @RCoANews

https://www.rcoa.ac.uk/news/results-anaesthesia-critical-care-covid-activity-survey
64% return rate by LC, covering 65% of UK hospitals.
Here are the NHS results.
Responses perhaps a bit lower in stressed regions
We RAG rated organisational stress according to this document https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5e6613a1dc75b87df82b78e1/t/5eac2a173d65cd27933fca88/1588341272367/Restarting-Planned-Surgery.pdf
But in essence
Green - functioning
Amber - stressed
Red - unable to function properly
Staffing was the most stressed
Big regional variations
Followed by Space
again regional variations ++

(Systems and stuff holding up well)
Only 44% hospitals were all green
More than half significantly stressed
Theatre closures varied wildly by region
With most hospitals using resource external to their hospital to maintain elective surgery
Even in the theatres that are working productivity is down
This adds up to a major reduction in activity

In Oct 2020 vs 2019 estimated 1 in 4 operations not done - that's almost 5000 a day
Impact most marked for
paediatric surgery > non-cancer elective surgery > cancer surgery > emergencies
Perhaps less regional variation in cancer surgical activity and of course in emergencies
Anaesthesia and critical care staff are resilient folk
Relatively small numbers off sick, shielding or redeployed to non-patient roles
But approx 7% (almost 1000) shortfall in anaesthesia numbers: most due to supporting ICU with estimated boost in full time ICU workforce of >20%
Great work by Local Co-ordinators and their teams. Thanks

Round 2 data collection starts tomorrow and it will be fascinating to see whether December (after lockdown) looks tougher than October (pre lockdown)
